Location: Johnstown, PA Date: January 1981 Time: 1:00am Weather: Clear, cold (3 below zero), moonless night During my senior year in High School I had heard from my classmates that the word “dead” would appear on the Laurel Mountain Summit sign on route 271. Route 271 connects the town of Westmont PA (a suburb of Johnstown Pa) and Ligonier PA. My friend and I had decided to check this out for ourselves. So late one night, a few days after New Years, we decided to check out the Summit sign. Route 271 slowly climbs up the side of Laurel Mountain heading west from Johnstown to Ligonier. We were the only ones on the road that night and the area where the Summit Sign is located is in a very isolated, forested area -- with no houses around for miles. After driving for some time we did see the sign and indeed the word “dead” did appear on the sign. It turns out that the Pennsylvania Dept of Transportation had reused a “Dead End” sign for the Summit Sign and at night headlights would illuminate the word “dead”. The sign was on the westbound side of the 2 lane road (the side we were on) and we slowed to look at it but soon decided we wanted a closer look. So I decide to turn my car around and park on the other side of the road so we could get out and have a closer look. I pulled a quick U turn and parked in the eastbound lane. Since the snow was piled pretty high along the side of the road I wasn’t able to pull off the road, so I stopped the car and decided to leave the car running, with the headlights and the emergency blinkers on. I figured we wouldn’t see any other cars at that time of night so I didn’t expect parking on the road would be any problem, and besides, we would be able to see any headlights coming our way and could move the car quickly if needed. My friend opened his door and walked behind the car heading toward the sign on the other side of the road. Likewise, I opened my door and also walked across the road. We both closed our car doors behind us. He made it to the sign first and crawled up the snow bank to have a closer look, he started shaking the sign which did create a bit of noise. I was close behind him and was starting up the bank when we heard the first scream. We both stopped what we were doing and froze in our tracks. I was a Boy Scout, as well as a native to that area, and have seen and heard most of the animals in that area but this was something different, something I had never ever heard before. The scream was very long and oddly human-like and came from the side of the road where we had parked the car. It sounded like a woman screaming, but yet we both felt it wasn’t a person. There wasn’t another person around for miles in any direction and summit was forested land for miles in every direction. My friend and I both looked at each other and then stupidly asked each other “was that you”. After just a few seconds of trying to come to gripes with what had just happened the scream occurred again. Both of us started running towards the car immediately. Another scream occurred when we were both about half-way across the road and then another right when to got to the car. The scream remained pretty consistent and it was obvious to us both that whatever was doing this was getting closer each time. My friend refused to go to the other side of the car (near the forest) to get in the passenger side so we both ended up fumbling to get the driver side door open. Once we got the door open he dove across to the passenger seat and I hoped into the driver seat, threw the car into drive and tore out of there as fast as I could towards Johnstown. The last scream we heard was when we were fumbling to get into the car, we both felt that whatever was doing the screaming was pretty close to the car at that point. But given that the forest was right along the roadside, and being that it was pitch black out we never saw a thing, so we could only guess it was closing in on us. The next day we returned to the area but didn’t find any tracks, but given the difficulty we were having getting thru the deep snow it’s unlikely we were able to search a wide enough area. We returned to that area many nights afterwards but never heard or saw anything else.
