Searching For Bigfoot At White River Arizona, August 2006Apache NationOn August 17th of 2006, Tom Biscardi and the Searching for Bigfoot team showed up on the White Mountain Apache Reservation to answer a request from Collette Altaha, Public Relations Director for the Apache Tribal Council. We had driven out from California to the town of Whiteriver, Arizona, to the White Mountain Apache Reservation where the administrative center for the tribe is located. The administrative center of the White Mountain Apache lies south of Hon-Dah in a valley, surrounded by high forested hills. It's easy to confuse the name of the town with that of the river flowing beside it, but the town is spelled as one word. Whiteriver has a motel, restaurant, shopping center, Indian Health Service Hospital, and tribal offices. Once at the center, Collette met us and brought us into her office. She explained to Tom that there had been numerous sightings on the reservation for over the past 25 years, and they had been hesitant to share these sightings with the “outside” world. The tribal police had amassed a huge amount of evidence on this creature over the years, but was hesitant to make news about the sightings public. However, after following the news about the work being done by The Searching for Bigfoot Inc. team, lead by Tom Biscardi, and seeing how we have been bringing so much credibility to the subject of “Bigfoot” in general, they decided it was time to share their findings with the public. Collette went on to explain that the tribe would like our help in understanding what had been seen in their community and to help share their findings with the “outside” world.
As you can well imagine, Tom and the team were extremely honored to be asked to help and had no hesitation about offering our services to the tribe. Collette jumped right in and began introducing us to the tribal leaders, including the Chairman, Ronnie Lupe, and the Vice Chairwoman, Margret Baha-Walker, as well as several other important board members. With the introductions done, we began our investigations.
Our first visit was with the head of the White Mountain Apache Tribe Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Division, John Caid. John gave us a quick run down of some of the more recent events and sightings in the community. The most recent being just a few days earlier. We wanted to know as much as we could about these incidents and asked who we should talk to about them. John made a phone call and had the man in charge of the evidence department come in to open the room and bring us some of the evidence stored inside. We were shocked to find that they had several casts of foot prints, hair samples they had collected and pictures of prints. The samples had been investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The copy of the written report we were given showed that the hair found was of “non-human animal origin”. These types of results are beginning to be a regular finding for us… With nothing to compare the results with, there can be no firm identification! One of the first incidents we checked into was a 911 call that came into the White Mountain Apache Tribal Police Department on 8/14/2006 at approximately 2:30am. The officer who responded was Katherine Montoya. Officer Montoya was kind enough to give me a written statement of the incidents of that evening. The following is part of that statement: “I was called for a prowler at the Lupe’s residence. The caller had told dispatch there was something black, tall, and hairy looking at him through a window. While on route, dispatch advised me that the subject was standing by the freezer behind the house. I pulled into the driveway and my patrol unit headlights hit a black tall being, standing between two pine trees by a broken down truck. The being turned his head towards the light, grabbed, what looked like, its head and ducked down. I advised my lieutenant that the thing was down, sitting by the truck. Lieutenant Kahn then came around the back heading by the truck. I then heard a loud crashing sound! Upon further investigation, we found that the fence behind the truck had been broken out! I noted that when I saw the subject standing by the truck, about 30 feet away, it stood approximately 6’7’’ tall. It appeared to be about 220 pounds or more. It had exceptionally long arms, it did not appear to be wearing any clothes and just appeared black. When it turned towards me, the most obvious feature was its eyes. The skin around his eyes was a lighter color than the rest of the face. It appeared almost white while the rest of the suspect was black. I could smell a distinct odor, like a stink bug. You know, when you squish a stink bug it smells. It never made any sounds until it crashed through the fence behind the truck.” When I asked Officer Montoya about her reaction to what she saw, she told me; “All I could say was OH MY GOD! I was startled and surprised, but I never felt scared or threatened. I just wanted to know more about it!” My next question was ‘Have you ever encountered anything like this before?’ And to my surprise, Officer Montoya said; “Yes… one time my mother and I were driving out in the country, after a snow storm. We saw something like this walking past some fields. When it saw us, it started walking away, right next to our car. We were going between 15 and 20 miles per hour, but this thing stayed right along side of us for about 20 yards before it turned into the woods. It wasn’t running, it was more like speed walking. I was in shock, but my mother just started praying loudly. I wanted to try to follow it, but my mother kept praying and saying let’s get out of here… that is the devil and we need to get away from here. My mother is elderly so I took her home.”
After talking to Officer Montoya, Tom suggested we go out and talk to the Lupe family, so we drove on out. There we met with Barry Lupe and his wife Tammy. They confirmed that they had made the 911 call, when they saw this creature looking through the window at them. They told me they had never seen anything like it before and it scared them, so they called 911 to report it. Some of the other reports we got to share were just as interesting as this most recent case. We have a lot of work to do, before we can check into all of them, but we will be back to continue our investigations.
Just a few items that the Police are investigating.
A.K. Riley is still investigating many of the cases on file, along with his team of officers. The team was overwhelmed with the wealth of information available for us to check into. To our surprise, A.K informed us that we could have access to all of the Tribal Police files and reports on these matters, including the items they had secured in their evidence room! We found all of the evidence that had been collected to be real and credible. Most of the prints taken had clear dermal ridges and showed no signs of being faked in any way. We knew we would have to schedule a much longer stay, here in the Apache Nation and began making arrangements for our next visit. Before we left, Tom and the team were given surprise with still another honor. We were informed that because the Apache Nation took these sightings seriously and did not want them to be misrepresented by the less credible Bigfoot research organizations, they would not allow any group other than Searching for Bigfoot Inc., to enter the reservation to attempt to investigate any of these cases. In fact, we as an organization were given a permit to continue our research. Along with the permit, each of us was presented with an official tribal pin and a memo was issued from the tribal headquarters stating that any member of the Searching for Bigfoot team, wearing the pin, would be given clearance to investigate anywhere on the 1,600,000 plus acre reservation. The team was very proud and is looking forward to coming back for a longer stay so we can continue Searching for Bigfoot….
